Almost Half of Katrina-Hit Head Start Facilities Still Closed

OCT. 5, 2005 | Almost half of the Head Start facilities hit by Hurricane Katrina on Aug. 29 are still closed because of extensive damage, according to the federal Administration on Children, Youth and Families (ACYF).

The ACYF issued a notice to Head Start and Early Head Start grantees Oct. 4, announcing, “Hurricane Katrina caused damage to more than 200 Head Start facilities. Nearly 100 of these facilities were so significantly damaged that they are still closed and most will require replacement or extensive repair. While no data are yet available, we can only assume that the damage caused by Hurricane Rita will add to this number.”

The ACYF encouraged grantees to work “as quickly as possible” to restore services. It also called on grantees to serve eligible children and families displaced by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

The  complete notice is available here.
